Some people believe that residents are responsible for the place where they live to be clean and tidy while others believe that government is responsible. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

It is argued that people are responsible for the cleanliness of the place where they live while others are opposed to this and believe that governments are responsible. In my opinion, it is the responsibility of people to clean the area where they reside.

On the one hand, some advocates have the view that people should take responsibility for cleanliness of their area as they produce garbage. Households use myriad of things on daily basis and produce heaps of trash in the form of wrappers and used bottles. Instead of relying on their local administration, they should accumulate it and dump it at landfill sites. By doing this, their society will remain healthy and will not be prone to diseases. In Kenya, for instance, most households use commercial dustbins for their garbage and are reluctant to depend on their local municipal staff. They know that their country is poor and does not have enough resources; hence, they should take responsibility to keep their area tidy.

Conversely, many believe that a government is responsible for providing a clean environment to its citizens. This is because it collects taxes from the public at large which it needs to spend on them by providing hygienic and clean environment. However, it usually has more important tasks to do, such as education, quality health services and defending borders. Therefore, although it can assist its citizens in the collection of garbage, people should take responsibility to keep their areas clean and tidy. Local people of Maldives, for example, help the government in the accumulation of rubbish which saves the considerable cost for the government. The government in return spends its substantial budget on providing free education to poor children.

In conclusion, instead of depending on the government, people should take responsibility for keeping their area free of garbage. This is because government has other crucial duties to perform.
