Differing / different

Product Life Cycle refers to the various stages through which a product passes, from conception and development through introduction into the market through maturation and, finally, withdrawal from the market. At each stage, managers face differing costs and potential returns.

I found the following explaination on a forum. They say:

different--not the same

differing--disagreeing

I'm still not seeing the nuance. I'd say I'm quite comfortable with using "different," I use it often and don't need any second thought about it. But whenever I see the word "differing," I have to stop and wonder a bit what it actually means.

1. Could you explain to me the difference between the 2 words?

2. Why use differing in the above Quoted Sentence, did it mean: a conflicting costs? discrepancy in the costs? I am trying to figure out what 'point' he's trying to make/emphasis by using differing, instead different.
