Differentiation betwee formal and informal

hi, I need your help to make it clear if idioms are less formal for formal documents, and it would be of great help to put belows into category of '' formal' or informal.

bring up refer to

keep from ing prevent

keep up continue, go on

cut down on reduce, dwindle

get into enter

Bottom line what mattters most

The point is if idioms are possibly to be used in formal documents and if idioms sound less formal than other words above.

thanks

Hi, Basically, your two columns mark out the phrases into informal and formal, so I think you are already pretty confident about when you would use each phrase. Personally, I would be wary of using informal phrases in formal documents, although I would use them freely in an email. Informal Formal bring up refer to keep from prevent keep up continue, go on cut down on reduce, (dwindle) get into enter bottom line what matters most I have made an exception of dwindle, because this doesn't really mean the same as 'cut down on'.

  • To cut down means that you have taken action to achieve this aim.
  • However, dwindle is normally used when something reduces due to other reasons or indeed through lack of action.

It looks like you have already done that, BH. You have them in two columns, an informal column and a formal column. What is your question?
