or

3. Storr says that Spero's work about Vietnam War represented a very different picture of war to that picture of war (general war) he expected in 2002 to see in Spero's 2003 work.

Context:

When the war in Iraq began in 2003, many observers believed that the conflict would be so different and so distant from their everyday reality that it would ultimately bear comparison only with the visual language of the more space-age and militaristic cartoons and comic strips. The art historian Robert Storr evoked this view in his introduction to the catalogue (September 2003) for an exhibition of Nancy Spero’s Vietnam War series. Citing a special edition of Popular Science on the twenty-first-century soldier, he describes ‘laser equipped space stations knocking out missiles in the upper atmosphere … robotic figures in Spandex-like uniforms’, with ‘no bloodletting’ and ‘no cries.’ This war has, in contrast, been mercilessly bloody, violent, emotionally destructive and, sadly, compelling; a spectacle like no other.
We could glimpse the true reality of the Iraq war in the burnt and abused bodies of the four US security guards killed on 31 March 2004. Dragged through the streets of Falluja, their blackened remains were hung on a bridge over the Euphrates. Participants took photos that many newspapers around the world printed the next day. This showing-off reflected an age-old tradition of battle – one that most people had hoped was a thing of the past.
Storr suggests that Spero’s work provided ‘a very different picture’ of war to that which he had anticipated in 2002 but her war art, like the Spaniard Francisco de Goya’s, was in fact timeless in its ferocious personal response and in its depiction of brutality. Spero may not have seen the Southeast Asian conflict in person, but television had taken the war into living rooms in most countries and she saw it there and in newspapers (Art and War by Laura Brandon).
