Different tenses in paragraph writings

I am trying to write a paragraph about Mahatma Gandhi Who died in 1948. Can you please tell me which tense I should choose?

My problem is that I can't decide present or past which tense I should choose.

  • Mahatma Gandhi, who is known as the father of the nation in India is/was one of the saintly people of the world who have ever lived/ever lived. He was born on 2nd October 1869. He was a great patriot and a freedom fighter.

I think was should be used in the first sentence. an I think "...was one of the most saintly people who have ever lived." This gives the idea that though Mr. Gandhi is dead yet he is compared with all the saintly people (who may be alive or dead) as of now.
