Different tenses in a sentence :) ?

Hi there,
Once a guy told me that I cannot use different tenses in one sentence, I speak quite natually and fluently but the comment this guy made, made me quite cautious about writing. Could please tell me if the sentence below is ok? especially the "are" part.
Thanks.

The sentence is fine. Were could be used in place of are , but I don't think it's necessary.

That's a somewhat-related issue, but the main thing is that there is absolutely no reason for all the verbs in a sentence to be in the same tense.
