Grammar

Different tenses

Hey Everyone!

Have a grammar question. One of the teachers I work with approached me with one of these University entrance examination English books, and asked me for a simplified explanation of why the answers to the following questions are what they are:

1) I will tell him to call you when he ( ) from his trip

a) return b) returned c) returns d) will return

2) We don't know when he ( ) back to Japan again

a) comes b) has come c) would come d) will come

So I know the answers are C and D respectively, but can't find a good way to explain why #1 isn't D.

Any simple explanations would be welcome!

Thanks

Anonymous Any simple explanations would be welcome! We don't use the modal will after certain subordinating conjunctions, like when, before, after, once, until, if, and unless . The when clause is an indirect question in #2, so the restriction does not apply there.
