Different applications of "with" and "by"

Hi
Sometimes I become confused about using "with" and "by".
i.e
The tent was lit by a lantern?
Or
The tent was lit with a lantern?

Prepositions are hard to learn (and hard to teach) because their use is often idiomatic.

Both are OK in this case.'By' is a little better, in my opinion.
