What's the difference between these two sentences?

I stayed in the hospital for a week.

I was in the hospital for a week.

The first sentence gives the sense that 'you were in the hospital, attending somebody/spending for/a week as a guest'.

The second gives the sense that 'you were admitted in the hospital for a week'.
