Differene : Baptised/christened

Are 'baptised' and 'christened' synonyms of 'nick naming'?

I came across these sentences in today's newspaper :
The BJP(its a political party) has BAPTISED the Ambetkar stadium as Deer Dayal Nagar,
while the CPI(another political party) has CHRISTENED the Talkalar stadium as E.K. Nayanar Nagar

Thanks.

I have only heard Christened used in this sort of way before, as a way of saying 'officially named'. Baptised seems a bit odd here. A nickname is an unofficial, often jokey, name.
