differences in meaning

Hi,

These two similar sets of words have confused me in their applications. Please help me to understand the differences. The sets in confusion are:

1) large and big

2) rotund and plump

Top answer

1-- large and big are synonymous, but often collocate idiomatically with other words ( a big mess, a large increment ). You will just have to observe and remember. 2-- of people, rotund is used jocularly while plump is used fondly.
