Differences between ''which'' and ''where''

Are all of the following sentences okay, or is only one of the two sentences correct in both examples?

Example 1: The situation where we found ourselves in was dire vs The situation in which we found ourselves was dire

Example 2: The Town where we were driving to was 50 miles away The Town to which we were driving was 50 miles away
