Differences between "was able, could and managed to".

Good evening!

Do the words "was able" and "managed to" have a very similar meaning?

I did watch the movie (Sherloc Holmes) and I have mentioned that they do use "managed to" in some sort of sentences.

May I kindly ask you? How often do that verbals turn use in nowdays ?

If I say: "managed to" and "was able" would it be very similar meaning?
Kind regards,
Danil
