Avoid means to escape from something that now exists. Prevent means to stop something from existing. You avoid being hit by a baseball by jumping out of the way. You prevent being hit by a baseball by setting all baseballs on fire.

If you censure something, you contemn it (say it is bad). If you censor something, you block it from being published.
