I have taken my meds [.....(took my meds)...now] --> happened in the past but connected to now (so I don't have to take it again (today))

I had taken my meds (before I went to sleep) [....(took my meds)....(went to sleep)....now] --> happened before another past event (probably doesn't have any relations with the present)
