Hi,
I don't understand the difference between an adjunct and modifier according to these definitions:
Modifier - Any word or phrase which limits the meaning of another word or syntactic unit.
Adjunct - Any part of a sentence which could in principle be removed without making the sentence ungrammatical. An adjunct is always an adverbial of some kind.
Could someone give some examples for a modifier? I can understand the adjunct definition.
Thanks
There are two flaws in your definition: first, an adjunct is a modifier and, second, modifiers are also optional elements. The main difference between adjuncts and other modifiers is that the former occur in clause structure, or as a supplement attached to a clause. In other words, adjuncts modify verbs and verb phrases, or they present non-integrated content.
