Difference between "this", "that", and "it"

Hi!

I've been studying English for over 15 years and I've reached an advanced level, but I still haven't figured out the differences between "this", "that", and "it" in the following situations:

Situation A:
Anna: I've got some news for you: I've found a job!
Henry: Wow! That / this is great news!

Both "that" and "this" sound OK to me. Which should I use and why?

Situation B:
Anna: Whose Ipod is this? (holding an Ipod)
Henry: That / It is mine!

Both "That" and "It" sound OK tom me. Which should I use and why?

Thank you!

AlpheccaStars,

Thank you for your explanation!

I have 2 questions about your last example. Both "Yes, I read IT" and "Yes, I read THAT" sound OK to me. Is "it" the only grammatically correct option in this case?

In what situation would you say "Yes, I read THAT?"

I thank you again!

Both are grammatically correct.
But "it" is more natural to me.
