Both sentences, as given, don't make sense. You live in your country, so how could you never be there? This apparently means "your parent's/grandparent's country." For example:
"I had never been to my parent's country before. Last year was my first time." (= Last year, you visited the country your parents immigrated from. It was your first visit there.)
