Difference between the number 1 and the word "One"

Hi,

My question is perhaps rather simple, but i was wondering whether anyone could help to explain the difference between the number 1 and the word "One".

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

It is more formal to write numbers in words unless writing a list. Also one could refer to I, One is going to the theatre - I am going to the theatre (the only people that I hear use this are extremely posh - it is used by the Queen). I would say I'm going.
