Difference between Thanks and Thank you

Dear ones,
What's the difference in the use of thanks rather than thank you?
When is it appropriate to use one or the other?

The only distinction I'm aware of is that "Thanks" is less formal. I think it is generally accepted even in more formal situations, however. When in doubt, use "Thank you".
