  • Anonymous Anne was writing a letter while Steve was reading the New York Times.
  • Anne wrote a letter while Steve read the New York Times.

  • Both are ok, though I would use the second version.
  • Unless the context requires, there is not need to use past progressive tense on two events.

and what about:

1. he had a book.

2. he have had a book.

3. he had had a book.

is there any need to use the more complex versions? (i mean the second and the third) is it even grammatically right? :/

Both are correct, but they don't mean the same thing.

(1) Anne and Steve were doing different things at the same moment.

(2) Anne and Steve did different things (maybe this morning or yesterday afternoon, not necessarily at the same moment).

Since I was able to answer the question asked by anonymous without being a member of this community, I'd like someone to help me.

I've been trying to get my free account for a long time but there always appears a notice saying that my e-mail address is wrong, which is not true.

What can I do?
