Difference between so and that

Please could you explain the difference between so (so awful) and that (that awful).

They are simply variants with the same meaning. It can't be that awful = It can't be as awful as that. = It can't be so awful = It can't be so awful as that.

Only the form with 'so' can comfortably continue with a 'that' clause.
