Difference between scolded and would scold

I think the sentence, 'The teacher scolded us if we did not do our homework.' is incorrect? 'Scolded us' means it happened only once. Rather, the sentence should be, 'The teacher would scold us if we did not do our homework.'. Please could you tell if I am right, or if not why?
