Difference between Prepositions

What is the difference between under, underneath, below, beneath?

Example: Something is under/ underneath/ below/ beneath the table. It sounds like the meaning is the same regardless of which preposition I use.

Any help, thanks?

They are often synonymous. 'Below' does not necessarily mean 'vertically below', as in 'my house is below sea level'. 'Under(neath)', however, must be vertically so ('the octopus's garden is under the sea').
