Briefly, here's the idea. An email is an electronic communication, sent via a computer. A letter normally refers to a physical piece of paper sent in an envelope If someone says to me, 'I got a letter from Oxford University yesterday', I will assume it was not an email However, the meaning of words can gradually change.

  • I would not be surprised if some people are starting to refer to a formally-written email as 'a letter'.
