Difference between John and Sean?

How should I pronounce Sean...because I hear how American people say those names and they sound different, but I'm not sure what's the difference. Can you help me?

Sean starts with the same sound as "ship" and continues with "on" Sh-on. Sometimes you even see it spelled Shawn, which is how it sounds. Although the vowel sounds in John and Sean are a bit difference, depending on where you live, it's the first sound that matter.
