difference between "important" and "of importance"

look at the sentence below please: Cinematographs remain virtually unknown outside motion-picture industry even though their contribution sometimes matches that of the director of importance.
it was a "fill the blank " question in university entrance exam.
but it seems unnatural sentence to me , i guess a native English speaker never uses such structure. am I right?
my second question : what is the difference between "important" and "of importance" generally?
for instance :
A)it is important to me
B)it is of importance to me
thanks in advance

Top answer

The sentence in question seems to have an error. Instead of director 'of' importance', I believe it should be 'in importance'. Then it would mean that the importance of the cinematographs and director are being compared.

  • The sentence in question seems to have an error.
  • Instead of director 'of' importance', I believe it should be 'in importance'.
  • Then it would mean that the importance of the cinematographs and director are being compared.
  • Important means the same as of importance, but you'll find important used more frequently.
  • Interestingly, however, in the sentence offered for discussion, 'importance' was necessary.

If the sentence were written correctly, there would be no instance of "of importance". See above.
