Difference between had and was ?

Could anyone explain difference between had and was with example sentences ?

Had is the past tense of the verb "To have". It can also be used for past perfect.e.g: (Past simple) He had two dogs when he was a child. (past perfect) He had been a teacher for two years when the strike started

Was is the past tense of the verb "To be" e.g; I was there when the riot began. I was a teacher back then...

i still didnt get what is the difference in was and had and in what kind of sentence do we use was and in what kind of sentence do we use have.....

please clarify me because i am very confused where and what do i use
