Difference between 'go to the movies' and 'go to the movie'

Hello,

I'd like know the difference between 'go to the movies' and 'go to the movie'. Which ones in the following sentences are correct?

eg 1

A: 'Let's go to the movies/the movie this weekend. What do you say?' ( when A is just suggesting a weekend activity and not suggesting which specific movie to see )

B: 'That's great. How about hp 7?'

A: 'OK, let's see it.'

eg 2 (at the weekend, B is talking to A through the phone)

B: 'Hey, you said the other day about seeing hp 7. How about tonight?'

A: 'I'm so sorry, I can't go to the movie/the movies tonight. My parents are coming over.'

Thanks in advance!
