Difference between 'doing and the doing of.'

Hello, here's an MCQ question.

Astronomy is the study of celestial bodies in outer space, [especially their positions, dimensions, movements, and composition].

A) typed above
B) the study of their positions, dimensions, movements, and composition.
C) especially studying their positions, dimensions, movements, and composition.

I am entirely confused by the the forms: "studying and the study of."
Besides, when does studying needs an antecedent?

Thank you upfront.
