Difference between ''Do this'' and ''Do that''

I hear both in American movies, is there a difference between them? do you use them interchangeably?

Top answer

Whether they are interchangeable or not depends on the situation. Normally, "do this" is more immediate, closer at hand, personal. You want someone to imitate an action you are presently showing them.

Normally, "do that" implies distance in time or space and is less personal.
