Difference between contribute to and contribute towards

I do not understand the difference between "contribute to" and "contribute towards". I am not sure which one works better in my own examples below.

(1a) I would like to contribute thirty dollars to his birthday gift.

(1b) I would like to contribute thirty dollars towards his birthday gift.

(2) I would like to contribute thirty dollars towards buying his birthday gift.

Please help me. Thanks a lot
