Greetings, it is sometimes the case in lexicology when proper nouns are converted into common nouns, with all the spelling consequences following from that transition. In a strictly astronomical sense, the Sun is more the Sun than the sun, but in popular usage this celestial object is simply perceived as a source of light and, hence, decapitalised. The same applies to North/north, which are perceived as directions only.

  • By the by, the Earth (earth) is another example of this transition.
