difference between chatting and talking

Hi, folks,

first of all: I'm German, but please help me regardless ;-)

when I write in a chat like Facebook: "I'm talking about the topic xy", is this correct? The question is about the word 'talking'. Is it correct to use it like that in chats ? Another example sentence: "You know what I'm talking about..."
My chat partner is in the opinion that I have to write: "You know what I'm chatting about ...." because we are in a chat and talking is only with voice.

I also read the similar question, but I think it's different here in my case.

So, please help us...

regards and greetings from Germany
Christina
