Difference between at, on and by someon's side

Could someone tell me the difference in meaning in these sentences?
1. "He just didn't go into the pool, he just sat at the side, dabbling his feet in the water".
2."On either side of this stream respectable and cold persons have taken up their abode."
3."I soon find my self at her side."
4."I soon find my self by her side."
5."We parted without conviction on either side".
