Difference between a narrative essay and a short story?

Hi everyone. I'm a English major college student in Taiwan. (We speak Taiwanese and Chinese)

My English writing teacher have required us a 5 paragraphs narrative essay with free choice of topic. I decided to write a real story of one of my friend. Here is the link to my essay. It's not yet finished though. http://postimage.org/image/532eynmnf/

When I handed it to my teacher for a look, she asked me to rewrite it because it is not a narrative essay. She said it's more like a short story or a novel. And she wanted it to have strictly 5 paragraphs.

I was greatly confused. Isn't a narrative essay and a story supposed to be the same thing? About the strict 5 paragraph rule, sure I can rewrite the same contents into 5 paragraphs easily. But in my opinion it will make the essay awkward to read, especially where it involves conversations. I feel greatly confined under the rules. And it makes writing not so fun anymore.

What's point of these rules anyway? Will I get better in writing if trained under such strict rules? What do you guys think on this?

For the difference between Narrative text and your real story, I think Narrative text is imaginary, which means it is not a real story, and it is more like a legend or something. The purpose of the text is to entertain, to amuse the readers. As for the 5 paragraph rule, I don't think it affects you much in terms of improving your writing skills as I think the only good point is that it requires you to write carefully, selecting which part of the story you're going to write is needed.

  • Well, that's what I think.
