Difference between ...

I am citing the Oxford Dictionary.

vary - introduce modifications or changes into (something) so as to make it different or less uniform:he tried to vary his diet
diversify - make or become more diverse or varied: new plants will diversify the habitat

Looking at these definitions, I don't really see any difference between the words (in these senses). So can they be used interchangeably (for instance, in these examples)? Or maybe they can't in all cases?

I think they are mostly interchangeable, but not always. Since to me diversity connotes different types of things (like diverse plants in the habitat, diverse options to choose from), while variety is more like randomness (the weather varies, the direction of the wind varies, the food you eat varies). I wonder what other people think, though.
