Difference between

when should we use 'in behalf of' vs 'on behalf of'?

"in behalf of" is not natural to me in any circumstance. It sounds plain wrong. I'm surprised to see so many Google hits for it. I speak British English, so I'm wondering if it's more familar in American English or some other regional variant. Anyone else care to comment?

Agreed. To my American ear "in behalf of" sounds awful.
