Diff between present and past in perfect tense?

Hi everybody
Could you help me give a context in which each of these sentences apply

I have not seen him for fifteen years.
I had not seen him for fifteen years.

I only know that the first sentence is present perfect tense and the second is past perfect tense. I don't know in what context, in what situation each of these tense should be applied.
Could you help me show examples that use these sentences, so that I can fully understand it?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.
