diference between infinite and gerund

What is the difference between this two sentences?

I stop to smoke

I stop smoking

In 1., you stop whatever you're doing because you want to have a cigarette: the "to" shows your intention. In 2., you decide not to smoke anymore, you stop the habit of smoking; it would sound better if you wrote "I've stopped smoking".

BTW, you must write "infinitive"

May I add something Pieanne?

I would rather use a past tense instead of the Present Simple. Else I'd go for a Present Continuous (meaning a future action).

If you see a board saying "Don't smoke while walking", you'd better stop to smoke. But I've never seen a driver who stops driving to smoke in his/her car.
