Diesel fuel is prepared from fractions of petroleum and light gas oil. An important property of diesel fuel is the cetane number or diesel index, which is a measure of the ignition quality of a diesel fuel. Paraffins have the biggest cetane number, paraffins have smaller, and then come naphthenes, and finally aromatics.
