Because parents will take their kids to see something that seems, on the face of it, potentially entertaining, even though they know deep down that it won't be.
My family contributed $15 to the The Pacifier's opening weekend, and though my daughter was vaguely amused during it, her father was slightly less so. Yes, the characters were wooden, Vin Diesel was even less convincing on screen than usual (though I really liked him in both Pitch Black and Boiler Room), and the humor was flat and predictable.
We've also seen Are We There Yet? with Ice Cube, a far superior kiddie flick, which, though it still plays by-the-numbers, at least has a bouncy, fun feel to it. Recently, my daughter (nearly 5) has become enamored with live-action films she still loves the animated fare, but she's started to perk up at the slapstick live-action stuff, too. Now she wants to see Ice Princess. She also, after seeing the trailer for it, wants to see Guess Who? but that's not going to happen. And that has a lot less to do with exposing her to racism at her young age than it does with keeping her from ever seeing an Ashton Kutcher film. We must protect the children!

When it's a Saturday or Sunday afternoon and there's a new movie out she wants to see, and it looks relatively inoffensive, we hit the flicks, and I imagine that's what, oh, 2 million or so other families did as well.

It adds up fast...
