Died vs Dead

Why on English TV programmes, I hear people say something like:

"I thought John was dead!"

but not

"I thought John died"

?

Pure coincidence. Maybe one day you will hear someone say, "I thought John died" or "I thought John had died" instead. They are all similar ways of saying the same thing.
