Died + V-ing: died knowing?

Is this the contraction?

He died knowing that his father has gone.

Is the above sentence the contraction of "He died when knowing that his father has gone"?

Please help me and could you give me some more examples of this kind of structures so that I would understand more?

Thank you so much in advance!
