Died

Is: I've been told he died last year. an incorrect usage of the present perfect tense?

I've read the other posts on past perfect tense is still don't understand how:

I had been told he died last year .makes sense. Wouldn't this mean I was told he died before he actually did die?

It's fine. It means that, at some point in the past, I was told about a past event, and the fact that I was told has some relevance to the present situation.
