Didn't vs Doesn't in this sentence

Alright here are the both sentences
She doesn't know Chicago because she hadn't been out of her town until a year ago
[Meaning that she still doesn't know Chicago because it's only been a short while since her first travel outside her town] She didn't know Chicago because she hadn't been out of her town until a year ago[Meaning that she didn't know Chicago but she does now] Well, I say they're both correct but someone else says that only the second one is correct Thanks for your help in advance

Top answer

I find the underlying logic here shaky. She was out of her town in the last year. Maybe she went to Chicago.

Yeah it's kinda confusing, but in both sentence's she's in Chicago, but that doesn't change anything does it, we just don't get enough context
