[didn't visit the park] /[hadn't visited the park] for a long time

I have made up the sentences below.

(1) I didn't visit the park for a long time. When I went there last week, it looked very different.

(2) I hadn't visited the park for a long time. When I went there last week, it looked very different.

Most of my friends think either tense works. But, the rest think (1) sounds better because it's consistent with the tense in the second sentence.

Which one is correct? Thank you very much.
