Didn’t or don’t

Turns out I don’t want new. I want you.”

Should it be “didn’t” - Turns out I didn’t want new. I want you.

Context: Missing and regretting leaving an old lover.

Should I use didn’t or don’t ? Or can I use either?

If you use the correct symbol for the apostrophe ( ' ) the letter that follows will stop displaying in upper case. The symbol you're using makes the letter after it upper case.
