Difficult without context, MoH, but I think it's a kind of melodramatic joke (the joke would lie in the confusion of tenses):

'I intend to do all that I can to prevent you from dying down here.'
'The mere fact that you intend to rescue me demonstrates that you didn't let me die.'

But no doubt an entirely different meaning would be revealed, if you provided more context...
