Did you... on the weekend/last weekend?

Hi. Let's say it's Wednesday. I know that my friend sometimes sees his brother on the weekend. Would these be equally natural? What would you say?

1. Did you see your brother on the weekend?

2. Did you see your brother last weekend?

"On the weekend" is impossible, in my part of the US, anyway.

Unlikely. An unspecified weekend in a past tense sentence is the one just past, so "last weekend" sounds ambiguous, like you're trying to say the one
